Autumn Eve

by Margaret Field

The swirl of birds pirouette lightly,
Whirl above rook roost
Nature's ballet sweet
In salmon scaled sky
Illuminated smoke wisps of cloud
Glowed gold with day's dying fire.
Crimson dusk in crescendo of glory.
Paints the tall roost of matted twigs
High in the copse pinioned by wind
Unblemished by storm for many a year.
A symbol of springs hope through long winter days.
