Acquaintance with Tides

by Margaret Field

"Ebb," by definition is,
A movement of the tide from our land
A true recession, gradually lessen, to reduce
From the way of, to lower expectation.

"Flow" could be a steady move,
Continuous free current of tide.
Yet our cousins in the North would say,
With some glee, this watery affectation be - Swamp; a morass.
Not a relaxation or acceptance of a situation,
No voice of enthusiasm here,
Nor fluent performance,
Yet taken from the flood
Might not leave such acquiescence light.

"Eddy" will come back again
Always circular in which ever form is found
A whirlpool sure, though small.
Could we but see all their vicissitude?
Within this contrast, bright with allocution
When fortune hold such circumstance,
The worse for wear by turn and turn about.
And thought remains
Sure of Springtime promises bright.
Then Winter wraps tight about,
Damp, dreich, hard.
A bleak, but patient, long suffering.

So when upon the shore you stand,
In hope of horizons glow.
Watching long with patience,
As the gentle waters lap.
Heed the darker side,
The deeper hue of Ebb, Flow and Eddy
Hail truth always as a friend
When it comes with no respite.
Give thanks for the journey on
That with a companion in memory bright.
Enriches with gold evening light.
